Established in 1971, SPMC operates as an autonomousstate-owned limited liability entity, entrusted with the regulation andadministration of the country’s primary ports, namely the Dr. Jules Sedney Portof Paramaribo and the Port of Nieuw Nickerie.The Port of Nickerie,encompassing 1500 hectares of available land, is currently undergoingdevelopment for the establishment of a Deep Water Port & Special EconomicZone (DWP & SEZ).
SPMC is actively involved in the investment andenhancement of the Albina Jetty, with the strategic goal of overseeing andadvancing this facility in the near future. The independent status of SPMC isdesigned to ensure the professional and efficient management and maintenance ofthe port facilities.
SPMC, with an employee base of nearly 200 individuals,operates on a landlord port management model for the ports within itsjurisdiction. Under this current management approach, SPMC provides thenecessary infrastructure for stevedoring activities and facilitates variousprivate enterprises in developing their economic initiatives.
