Established in 1971, SPMC operates as an autonomous state-owned limited liability entity, entrusted with the regulation and administration of the country’s primary ports, namely the Dr. Jules Sedney Port of Paramaribo and the Port of Nieuw Nickerie. The Port of Nickerie, encompassing 1500 hectares of available land, is currently undergoing development for the establishment of a Deep Water Port & Special EconomicZone (DWP & SEZ).

SPMC is actively involved in the investment and enhancement of the Albina Jetty, with the strategic goal of overseeing and advancing this facility in the near future. The independent status of SPMC is designed to ensure the professional and efficient management and maintenance of the port facilities.

SPMC, with an employee base of nearly 200 individuals, operates on a landlord port management model for the ports within its jurisdiction. Under this current management approach, SPMC provides the necessary infrastructure for stevedoring activities and facilitates various private enterprises in developing their economic initiatives.
