Kersten Training Academy
In June 2024, the Kersten Group of Companies proudly announced the official opening of the Kersten Training Academy, an OPITO-certified training center focused on the onshore and offshore oil and gas industry in Suriname. Established in 2022, this new academy offers high-quality energy and industry-related training programs.
International Recognition
The certification organization OPITO (Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organization) is a global leader in establishing and verifying training and competency standards for the offshore oil and gas industry. In June 2024, the Kersten Training Academy achieved the coveted OPITO certificate, officially recognizing it as a facility capable of training individuals to the highest international standards.
Extensive Training Offerings
The Kersten Training Academy currently offers 13 OPITO programs, including Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET), Helicopter Underwater Training (HUET), and Further Offshore Emergency Training (FOET). Other available programs include training for lifting operations with or without cranes (Rigger and Banksman & Slinger programs. As part of its strategy the Academy will also expand its offerings by including vocational programs (mechanical and process technicians) and other safety related courses (Working at Heights, Firefighting, First AID & AED, etc.) to its portfolio.
Accessible to Everyone
The Kersten Training Academy welcomes both companies and individuals looking to enhance their knowledge of the offshore energy sector. The training programs are accessible to those already working in the sector, as well as to those without specific prior knowledge or qualifications.
Strategic Location and Local Involvement
Located on Sir Winston Churchillweg, opposite the Staatsolie refinery, the academy became a reality thanks to the support of Staatsolie, even before the first Final Investment Decision by an international oil producer. As part of its renewed strategy, the Kersten Group places a strong emphasis on local content. The academy is fully staffed by Surinamese personnel who have undergone intensive training over the past two years to acquire all relevant knowledge and skills.
This marks an important step for the development of Surinamese professionals in the rapidly growing offshore oil and gas sector.
